Surviving Unilag 101

Image
B y Okpor Elishama and Adiefe Olisemeka. University life is not as easy as it’s portrayed on Grown-ish . You don’t get to be Zoey Johnson with the celebrity best friends and lots of free time on your hands.  You get to be a Great Akokite, and we all know how easy that is (sarcasm intended). For you to survive as a fresher in the University of Lagos, you will need speed similar to the DC superhero ‘Flash’ (because those 8am classes wait for no man), resilience, and perseverance   Knowing the obstacles that come with being a university student is one thing, experiencing them and surviving is a different ball game. Here are some tips that could help you survive your first year in the University of Lagos: Make your first year your best year One thing you’ll hear often in your first year in the University of Lagos is to work extra hard in your first year, so you don’t have to work as hard in the future. There is some truth to that, but not entirely.  Working ...

How Physical resumption could trigger anxiety attacks

Image
By Okpor Elishama After months of limited physical and social interactions and a COVID lockdown, diving right back into interacting with multiple people at the same time could be very difficult for students with anxiety. Anxiety disorder is often ridiculed, viewed as an exaggeration of feelings by many people, and doesn't get as much publicity certain other mental disorders have. Although anxiety is a regular experience for humans, having an anxiety disorder isn't quite the same as being anxious about examination results. Many students have this disorder but fail to realize that this is the case. Some pretend it's the normal way to feel while some others refrain from mentioning it so as to avoid ridicule from peers. It is highly probable that students with this condition would not be happy about the news of physical resumption as opposed to the previous online schooling with its’ possibilities of less and less physical interaction. What is often brushed away as not ...

Resumption: UNILAG students Lament off-campus accommodation ordeal

Image
●        School hostels to reopen May 9 Paul Agada and Toyosi Adeniji As the University of Lagos (UNILAG) prepares to reopen physically for the second semester of the 2019/20 session after an eleven months closure, some students of the institution have described their private accommodation ordeal with facility managers. The emergence of the infectious COVID-19 disease in Nigeria forced the Federal Government to impose a nationwide lockdown in March 2020, a move which resulted in the physical closure of schools across all levels. In line with the government’s COVID-19 protocol, UNILAG management chose to complete the first semester of the 2019/20 session virtually. However, the school recently announced that its second semester which is scheduled to begin by May 10 will hold physically. Accommodation has been a constant challenge for students of the UNILAG because of the limited number of bed spaces available in the institution. As a result, som...

Unlike humans, Tik-Tok might live forever

Image
By Funmbi Oguntoye With the never ending cycle of emergence and erasure of social media apps, it’s no surprise that the longevity of the now trending app, Tik Tok is a recurring question.  Many wonder if the “hype” and sensationalism around the app will be sustained or if the app will fall off after a few years like its predecessor “Vine.” Research, domino effects of the app activity and some marketing values the app creators have set in place seem to do a good job at ensuring the all's permanence.   The music industry is a pivotal part of the entertainment world and Tik Tok through its various trends has greatly impacted the number of streams and revenue generated from songs. Many artists have also gained fame and exposure. A very good example is Olivia Rodrigo, whose debut single “Drivers License'' made its way to no. 1 on the hot 100 and further landed her a role on the Disney High School Musical series.  One major difference between Vine and Tik Tok is the d...

“I learnt a lot I wouldn’t have if COVID didn't happen." – Student Entrepreneur

Image
By Chelsea Abraham and Oluwasegun Oyebode The past year brought in a lot of changes for the world, turned institutions, businesses and, countries on their heads, trying to adapt to the new, changing, and very much trying times. We saw entire workforces and businesses scramble to save their systems and, for most, after many wasted efforts, salvage whatever they had left. Layoffs and business shutdowns kept many awake and sent others looking for alternative means of survival and that's just for already established individuals and organizations. So, what about the student business owners who, while in school, ventured into small businesses and put the rest of their time into the growth and viability of said businesses? In school, these businesses thrived as the student population already served as a target market and a fairly well-established customer base whose needs formed business opportunities for students with entrepreneurial instincts. For some, the closure of schools slowed...

Procrastination in school work

Image
By Adebayo Oreoluwa Matilda  Source: www.tinybuddha.com Let's face it. Majority of students don't like to study, so we just do it so that we don't fail. Having this mindset makes us easy targets for procrastination. Sadly, this affects our grades in negatively but most of the time, we still can't help it. A typical student can find the time to do everything else, except to open those study materials until examinations or tests are a second away.  Procrastination by definition is the postponement of upcoming activities and many of us fall victims very easily. Fortunately, there are ways to get over procrastination and avoid unnecessary stress when deadlines approach. Some of them are: Creating a designated workplace A designated work place is a particular spot in your house or room dedicated to accomplishing specific tasks. Having a specific spot for reading helps. It's best to find a spot comfortable enough for you to read and finish your other school wo...
