School na scam?

Image
Toluleke Aiyela The average Nigerian student always has a mantra on his lips, especially after seeing a poor result, ‘ School na scam ’ a statement implying that education is not always a guarantee of the success it promises. Judging from the low employment rate which contributes to the poverty level in the country, education has become one of the many methods everyone just goes through to fulfill a norm not with the mindset of achieving success through. While it is true that things are not what it used to be in the Nigerian Educational Sector with regards to delivery of quality and value, life is not a bed of roses and bumpy hitches come along once in a while. The faults in our educational system does not in any way reduce the fact that education remains a key in alleviating nationwide problems. 4 apps to help you learn a foreign language

Image
Oladipo Odufolakin   Nigeria has been recognized as one of the most linguistically diverse nations in the world, with over 500 languages spoken across different tribes. To bridge the gap among the different tribes, English was adopted as the official language of the country.   It is common to find a good number of Nigerians communicating with one another using English, thereby defying the barriers posed by the nation’s linguistic diversity. As such, many Nigerians primarily speak their native languages while they adopt English as a second language.   However, with the increasing globalisation of the world brought about by the internet, Nigerians are beginning to interact with individuals across the world more than ever before. As a result, the prospect of learning a foreign besides English is increasingly appealing to many.  Unlike before, learning a foreign language has been made easier with technology as several apps have been developed to help interested...

You don’t get to be Zoey Johnson with the celebrity best friends and lots of free time on your hands.  You get to be a Great Akokite, and we all know how easy that is (sarcasm intended). For you to survive as a fresher in the University of Lagos, you will need speed similar to the DC superhero ‘Flash’ (because those 8am classes wait for no man), resilience, and perseverance   Knowing the obstacles that come with being a university student is one thing, experiencing them and surviving is a different ball game. Here are some tips that could help you survive your first year in the University of Lagos: Make your first year your best year One thing you’ll hear often in your first year in the University of Lagos is to work extra hard in your first year, so you don’t have to work as hard in the future. There is some truth to that, but not entirely.  Working ...

How Physical resumption could trigger anxiety attacks

Image
By Okpor Elishama After months of limited physical and social interactions and a COVID lockdown, diving right back into interacting with multiple people at the same time could be very difficult for students with anxiety. Anxiety disorder is often ridiculed, viewed as an exaggeration of feelings by many people, and doesn't get as much publicity certain other mental disorders have. Although anxiety is a regular experience for humans, having an anxiety disorder isn't quite the same as being anxious about examination results. Many students have this disorder but fail to realize that this is the case. Some pretend it's the normal way to feel while some others refrain from mentioning it so as to avoid ridicule from peers. It is highly probable that students with this condition would not be happy about the news of physical resumption as opposed to the previous online schooling with its’ possibilities of less and less physical interaction. What is often brushed away as not ...
